Secrets of Love
Frankly, I wasn't expecting to like Secrets of Love by Donald Walters.
Walters is the author of more than 70 non-fiction books, including Secrets of Love, one of those spiritual self-help books that, frankly, I tend to consider somewhat suspect. And as a rule, I think writers should probably stick to writing leave composing to professionals.
That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by the 18 tunes on this CD.
Walters composed the tracks as music for meditation, hoping people would take the 70 minutes necessary to sit down and listen to the CD, while opening their hearts to the message that "love is the secret of all life."
The instruments featured on this CD are keyboards, flute, cello and harp. It has an over all feel of classical chamber music. It's light, unobtrusive and works quite well for meditating.
"With this music," Walters says, "I was trying to express soul love, love of God, love of God in nature, and a love of God in human beings, not a personal love, not desire, not sex, not boyfriend and girlfriend. I would like the music to stir deep feelings in the listerner becaue that is essential for real understanding."
Persoanally, I didn't feel those deep emotions stirring. The music is pleasant enough, but it tries a little too hard to remain in the background. However that very blandness does make the tape useful for meditation. If you actually focus on the title of each piece and let your mind drift from topic to topic, you might find yourself developing a few fairly interesting thoughs on the whole concept of love.
So, while Secrets of Love isn't exactly the kind of thing I'd put on a dinner party, it is a nice CD to listen to as you fall asleep at night.
You can listen to clips from Secrets of Love at Amazon.com.
