Resume
Goals:
- Writers are like sharks, if we stop moving forward, we die. I'm always looking for more freelance work as a writer, editor or webmaster.
Work Experience:
- Richland Beacon-News
(April 2002 to present):
As the managing editor of the Beacon-News, I do a little of everything. Mostly I cover stories, layout pages and take photos. I also make policy decisions for our newspapers in the area.
- Freelance writer and webmaster
(July 1999 to present):
I write short fiction and non-fiction articles, reviews and interviews with film stars for a variety of magazines. I also do web page design and consulting for newspaper and magazine web sites and various forms of desktop publishing.
- Freelance web design
(May 1998 to present):
Working on a volunteer basis, I designed web sites for the state chapter of Mensa, an international society for people with IQs in the top 2 percent of the general population, and for the El Dorado chapter of Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization working to provide affordable housing through sweat equity. I still serve as webmaster for the El Dorado Habitat chapter.
- The El Dorado News-Times
(June 1994 to July 1999):
The El Dorado News-Times is a daily newspaper with a circulation of 12,000 in Union County, Ark. I was a copy editor and webmaster. My duties included editing articles, page layout and design of advance pages and filling in on the night desk when needed. As webmaster, I designed the newspaper's web site from scratch and updated it on a daily basis. The News-Times' Online is located at http://www.eldoradonews.com. Maintaining the site involved creating graphics, editing and formatting content and dealing with the ISP and Internic about technical matters when needed.
- Riverside News Magazine
(December. 1993 to June 1994):
Riverside News Magazine was a monthly tabloid with a circulation of 20,000, specializing in in-depth news and features. I helped to found the magazine and served as editor during its first few months. During this time, I put together its computer and production system and helped to recruit its staff. I was responsible for editorial direction and content as well as training editorial and production staff employees.
- The Franklin News
(February 1991 to June 1994):
The Franklin News was a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 6,000 in Franklin Parish, La. I founded the newspaper and served as publisher and editor. Starting this business from scratch gave me extensive contact with all aspects of publishing a weekly newspaper. In addition, I acted as a freelance consultant helping to start two other publications during this time as well as supervising their production at my print shop. One of these was a medical employment tabloid and the other was a regional sports magazine. Both were published monthly.
- The Richland Journal
October 1988 to January 1991):
The Journal was a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 12,000 in Richland Parish, La. I held the position of editor and was in charge of writing and laying out the paper each week as well as writing editorials and handling some special promotions. I left the Journal in order to start my own newspaper when the the Journal was purchased by Louisiana Newspapers Inc.
- The Money Saver
(June 1988 to October 1988):
The Money Saver is a shopper with a circulation of approximately 30,000 located in Monroe, La. I was hired as editor in order to write news copy and design a news section while the owner studied the feasibility of changing the paper's format to that of a "real" newspaper. I left that job when the publisher decided not to go through with the format change.
- The Franklin Sun
(May 1986 to February 1988):
The Franklin Sun is a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 6,000 in Franklin Parish. I served as staff writer and sports editor at that newspaper during which time I covered events, wrote articles, made photo assignments and supervised layout of the sports section.
- The News-Star
(January to April 1986):
The News-Star is a Gannett-owned daily newspaper based in Monroe and distributed throughout northeast Louisiana. I interned at the newspaper's Ruston bureau as a general assignment reporter. I also did a few stories for the News-Star as a stringer from March 1988 to May 1988.
- The Delhi Dispatch
(May to September 1984):
This is a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 1,500 in Richland Parish. I interned there during the summer as a general assignment reporter while in college.
- The Tech Talk
(1982-1985):
This is the student newspaper of Louisiana Tech University. I started out as a staff writer and worked up the chain to eventually hold all of the various positions in the news department before starting my internship at the News Star. My main experience there was in writing, layout and design.
Computer Experience:

Software packages I've used for publishing include QuarkXpress, Pagemaker, Homesite, Pagemill, Frontpage Express, WordPerfect, Xywrite, Photoshop, PhotoStyler, Ofoto, Textbridge, Omnipage and Freehand.
